Seasonal - Open from Memorial Day weekend thru the second week of October
Monday thru Friday
11:30am to 9pm
Without a doubt, the most frequently asked question in the restaurant is "Can we have a table with a view?" Fortunately, that's an easy request to fill. The numerous picture windows provide each guest with a beautiful view of Lake Superior and marine traffic in the harbor.
What you are likely to see when you gaze out of those windows is the patio adorned with flowers and trees, providing a German/Austrian flavor; a sugarplum tree and a mountain ash stand directly outside the windows. You are also looking at our newly restored dock. As our valued guest you are most welcome to use it at your own risk.
On any given day, a variety of birds may pass into view; Mallards, Hummingbirds, Loons, a gagle of Canadian Geese (sometimes mixed in are: Crossbar, Snow Geese, Cackling or Hudson) that regularly visit the local waters. Of late, customers have been treated to occasional visits of the black bear as well.
The climate inside the Harbor Haus is always comfortable. For those chilly spring and autumn days, the fireplace keeps the room cozy. On those rare days when the temperature climbs toward triple figures (yes it does happen), the dining rooms are air conditioned for your dining comfort.
Copper plays a big part of the decor. Local businessman John Markam originally owned the 1,720 pound copper piece which stands outside the entrance of the restaurant. The Harbor Haus bought and transported it to its current location.
Many customers discover what an excellent conductor copper can be when they pass through the copper clad restaurant doors. In cold weather the doors are icy to the touch while in mid-summer heat, they reflect much of the heat outside. Our recommendation: use the door handles when you enter.
One of the hallmarks of the Harbor Haus is its commitment to only the freshest foods, including homegrown herbs and vegetables. In season, local strawberries, huckleberries, raspberries and wild blueberries grace breakfast and desserts. From soups and salad dressings, to the entre's and desserts, all items are created from fresh ingredients in our Haus kitchen. No prefabricated dishes are served at the Harbor Haus.
A variety of items on the restaurant walls carry an international flavor. Two deer skins can be traced to Northern Germany. A world-class collection of steins surround the dining area. The wall hangings near the stairway find their origins in Finland.
To satisfy your thirst, we have a thorough selection of domestic and imported beer, non-alcoholic beer, wines, dinner wine specials, and a full service bar to handle everything you need for a drink before, during or after your meal. Our wine list is one of the best in the Copper Country.
The men and women of our waitstaff are genuinely interested in your patronage of the Harbor Haus. The genuine smiles and grins and the twinkle in their eyes are full evidence of that. The waitresses attire is the Dirndl, the name of the traditional peasant dress that is still in fashion in Southern Germany and Austria today.
One time each day at about 6:00 to 6:30 PM. the waitstaff will disappear from your table to perform a dance on the patio outside the restaurant windows for the Isle Royale Queen's return trip from Isle Royale National Park. This greeting to the boat and passengers symbolizes the cooperative nature of the community of Copper Harbor, and has for the past few decades.
